Field Marks: 8.5 in. A furtive, medium-sized woodpecker of deciduous and mixed forests, orchards and residential areas. Drills rows of small holes in bark, then feeds on sap and insects attracted to it. Mottled pattern makes resting bird difficult to see. Adults have red crown, black and white stripes on face, and barred back; patch of white in wing and white rump are conspicuous in flight; underparts pale yellow with black crescent on breast. Male has red throat, female has white throat. Immature has brownish head and back. Call a whining     "churrr" or "skeeer."
  16. Range: Breeds from Alaska, Ontario, and Newfoundland south to ne. British Columbia, e. North Dakota, Missouri, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut. Winters from Missouri, Ohio Valley, and New Jersey south to Gulf Coast and Florida.
